“Collecting at Wesleyan” By Sarah Hoynes ‘16

Collecting at Wesleyan is an exhibit by senior Classics and Archaeology major Sarah Hoynes using material from the Wesleyan Archaeology and Anthropology Collections. In particular, it showcases South Italian pottery collected in the late nineteenth-century and Hopi and Tewa materials collected from the late nineteenth and into the early twentieth centuries. Most of the Hopi and Tewa material is from the extensive Melville Collection. This exhibit explores the history of these collections, as well as the larger narrative of motivations with regards to the Greek vase and Native American collecting traditions.
